Terlizzi in '800
...
" on 4th February 1799, after only 12 days after the arrival of French in Naples and the election of the Temporary Governement, "decurionati" decided to drive the "Tree of Freedom" in the Village. " (…)
What was the Tree of Freedom ? What did it represent ? What did it mean for the people ?
The "Tree of Freedom" was «the symbol of an evident concept, even if well defined only in a little people, of a common ideal ; it was a natural tree, an oak or a poplar that, driven in the main square of the town, meant the supremacy of democratic power. It was decorated with flowers, tricolour ribbons, and, on its top there was a "berretto frigio", symbol of people, symbol of the revolution.»."

Stemma della città
The aim of the Author is to give a wide vision of XIX century of Terlizzi. He is far from traditional schemes of some writers that, in a few fragments told daily events. He faces, as a chronicler, what social and political life was in those times. But they are far days only as for the time, in fact they are very near to us as for rural mind and mentality. Michele De Santis, thanks to his first volume :"TERLIZZI,LA REPUBBLICA PARTENOPEA !/))" faces the delicate theme of that "revolution" of 1799 which marked for all, Ignazio Ciaja of Fasano and, for Terlizzi, Michele Lamparelli, a student in Naples, who fought against Reactionaries of Cardinal Ruffo. This revolution was lived around here by violences and mournings. Fortunately.
Stemma dei Borboni
Terlizzi went out undamaged thanks to some capable and strong men who were able to keep the order and the love for the homeland. It' s just in those days of 1799 that Terlizzi's historical travel starts. Those days are symbols of the revenge of Borbons feudalty. A new path of "Risorgimento" starts with a Unity of Nation sealed by nowadays "Resistance". The work, "TERLIZZI NELL' OTTOCENTO", at his 4th volume (1811-1815),is going to have another volume, the 5th one:IL RISVEGLIO DELLA COSCIENZA POLITICA, I MOTI CARBONARI E LA COSTITUZIONE(1816-1820). But, at the same time, the work for the 6th volume is in progress:FINE DELLA COSTITUZIONE E LA REPRESSIONE(1821-1825).
