In the period of five years from September 1995 until 24th March 2000, there have been
some historical recalling both in Rome and here, as for Don PIETRO PAPPAGALLO and GIOACCHINO GESMUNDO, martyrs of Terlizzi,
who had a decisive rule in freeing Italy of Nazi-Fascism. They were slaughtered to "fosse Ardeatine" on 24th March 1943.

From these recallings, that concern 2 volumes written by Antonio Lisi (-Don Pietro Pappagallo-"un eroe, un santo";
-Gioacchino Gesmundo). For this Don Pietro Pappagallo received the GOLD MEDAL . The motivation is the following :
".priest of the Diocese of Rome during the german occupation, he collaborated for clandestine struggle and he protected
jews, antifascist soldiers and allies who ran away giving them helps to hide and to eat.

and lots of citizens from Terlizzi. Before, Also to Gioacchino Gesmundo was given a gold medal with a military value.
Other scholars partecipated to this commemoration: Vittorio Fiore, recently dead, son of a well-known antifascist and
supporter of Southern emancipation (Tommaso Fiore), numerous commanders of the Committee of Liberation (Marco Fiorentini,Capponi)
which explain the motivations of their act that caused the revenge of german troops that ended with the slaughter of Ardeatine.
On 31st October 1999, at Terlizzi, during the manifestation for the delivery of the gold medal from the "International
Foundation Carnegie " in memory of Don Pietro Pappagallo, don Gaetano Valente, scholar of Terlizzi, remembers the time
when he, young priest, discussed with Don Pietro.
Don Pietro Pappagallo,with Don Morosini, Don Chiaretti and other religious men, has been remembered by ROSARIO BENTIVEGNA
in an interview granted to the journalist Dino Messina published on "Corriere della sera" of the 23rd February.
Rosario Bentivegna, husband and companion of fight in the Resistence with Carla Capponi, protagonist with her and
other people to the attempt in Rasella street that caused the revenge of Germans with the slaughter of "fosse Ardeatine",
is the Author of "ACHTUNG BANDITEN" with subtitle "Prima e dopo via Rasella". The memory goes out from the consideration
of Bentivegna about the behaviour of Vaticano to Resistance.
Also Vito Antonio Leuzzi- President of the Institute of Studying for Antifascism, succeded to Vittorio Fiore after his death,
often remembered our fellow citizens; in fact in the recalling exposed in the hall of the town council of Terlizzi on 24th
March 2003 he solicited the town Administration to suggest to Authorities of Europe the acknowledgement to Don Pietro Pappagallo
and Gioacchino Gesmundo, together with all the people who sacrified their life for Freedom, as " European Martyrs for Freedom ",
considering the partecipation of the various Countries of The Community to the liberation of Europe from Nazi-Fascism to give
Freedom and dignity to their own people again.
Leuzzi still remembers that, with that carnage, Germans freed themselves from not-occasional victims but from effective
opponents of Nazi-fascism, naming Stanca and our martyrs.
During the last ceremony of commemoration someone noticed that not all the scolastic corporations were present even if,
in our town, there are pedagogic high school, grammar high school,Agrarian Institute, professional handicraft Institute.
Their absence is interpreted like a lacking sensitization of youngs in front of so important problems.
