The street where the ancient church of Cesano, named Santuario della Madonna del Popolo, is situated, links, at about 1 km,
the consular way Appia Traiana ( traced by the emperor Traiano)

and, in the east, enters in the provincial raod 231 Bari-Foggia (S.P. 231 Bari-Foggia). The Church is a rare evidence of
a particular type of structure of monastic settlement in Southern Italy. It has a rectangular plan, truss covering,
semicircular apse and friezes. Inside, the Church that in the past was surely painted in fresco, presents bare tacks.
Entering, on the left, you can see a fresco of a Virgin with his Child and, in the basin of the apse frescos

century, which represent the Deésis with the great figure of the Cristo Pantocrator
in the middle and, next to it the Theotòkos (Mother of Jesus Christ), Giovanni Battista, the precursor of Jesus Christ,
painted while they indicate to members of congregation the Cristo Pantocrator . There also was an altar-piece, recently
stolen representing the Visitation of Maria Santissima S.Elisabetta.

After, repairs led by Sovrintendenza ai Beni Culturali of Bari, made in 1984, thanks to the care of Gaetano Valente and Leonardo Lusito, Vincenzo Vitale, Gioacchino Gesmundo, Salvatore Pisano, Annamaria De Leo that made a Committee.
Recently, inside, the altar has been repaired.
